I wonder what you think of Vandana Shiva's argument that vitamin A deficiency in parts of India clearly results from "maldevelopment" that insists on monocropping-- obliterating the greens (now considered "weeds") that grew between the rows of traditional agriculture and provided plenty of carotenoids. Following this line of discussion, we don't need a new kind of corn or any other single crop--we need to get back to diversified fields.

Fascinating stuff here Jeremy, thanks. It's answered a few questions I had about carotenoids and saved me googling for them.
