An interesting 1903 ethnological survey by Albert Ernest Jenks about the Philippines, he says that "the Igorot cares very little for sweets; even the children frequently throw away candy after tasting it" and that sugar was consumed mainly for the production of alcoholic beverage. I was speaking to a doctor as well who said that some indigenous people she works with seem to have no "natural attraction" to sugar. However, this is about sugar and not sweet things in general, as rice, non-astringent root crops, and even some meat are classified as sweet in many indigenous frameworks for food and health.

Related to the delaying-reproduction-via-famine-food point, in India, an ayurvedic doctor mentioned to me that if you are trying to have children, one must to avoid bitter, pungent, and spicy food.
