Wanna farm snails?

Then head on over to Nigeria’s Daily Sun, where an interview with a retired director of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation makes is sound like an ideal life for the farmer seeking to diversify. He does consultancy too, which could make getting into that line of work easier.

  1. Well, that’s of course not a new idea.I remember during my graduate school days coming across an article that was given to me by one of my African fellow grad students. Of course, these are not the same snails as the ones we Europeans consume as escargot. I seem to remember theat the African species were much larger. Actually heliciculture is practiced in many different countries, not surprisingly to a fairly substantial degree in France. Here’s a nice website listing snail farming info sites worldwide:

  2. You’re absolutely right, it isn’t a new idea. But that doesn’t make it a bad idea, does it? Anything that might inspire a little diversification, or offer someone, somewhere an opportunity is worth noting. So thanks very much for the link, even though there’s nothing there from Nigeria (yet).
