That would be at the conference on Conference on Agroecology for Sustainable Food Systems in Europe: A Transformative Agenda that we Nibbled yesterday. You can also follow proceedings at #EUagroeco2013. Sounds like fun. Anyone there want to summarize it for us?
I suppose I shall have to trawl through the output to find out just what they mean by agroecology. One part of a long definition appears to be “Investigate existing power relations, decision-making processes and opportunities for participation in food systems. Investigate the role of citizens and consumers in food systems.” Not much ecology in that.
They seem to totally ignore the ecological principle of plant competition (and the equally important agronomic principle of reducing competition through field management). They should be taken on one side and told about woodland and grassland and the important ecological differences between them. A summary would be welcome – but not the kind of thing that came out of the IAASTD.
