Thanks to Helmut Knüpffer for sending in a scan of the Plant Introduction Newsletter No. 22 (July 1969), featuring a short report about the “FAO Panel of Experts on Plant Exploration and Introduction”. This includes a photograph of the eminent participants, one of whom is Erna Bennett (top left), who died a few weeks back.
Yet another photograph surfaces. The Oxfam bookshop in Adelaide is a constant source of treasures. Today I purchased books formerly cared for by Philip G. Tow of Roseworthy Agricultural College, University of Adelaide. Amongst these is Agricultural Ecology. An Analysis of world food production systems. Cox G. W., Atkins, M. D. (1979) Freeman, San Francisco.
On p. 517, Fig 21-2 depicts a female genetic conservation specialist of the FAO collecting samples of wheat in Greece (photograph F. Botts, courtesy of FAO, Rome). In my humble opinion this can only be Erna Bennett. [the photo below Fig 21-3 is credited to Erna, and Erna has collected in Greece (C. Lehmann’s IPK office records]. It would be worthwhile to check with FAO for further pictures…
