I think that the Trelawny yam that Usain Bolt’s father credits with his success is a member of the genus Dioscorea, not a sweet potato. An article in the Washington Post gives more details on the yam.
It also describes the Trelawny Yam Festival, which is held in Jamaica every year. On the Yam Festival web site, there is a link describing the diversity of yams and their history in Jamaica.
