Gardens of peace and reconciliation in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The project isn’t just about food – reconciliation and the regaining of trust are equally important. We’re working with people who suffered a lot during the war and our main goal is to bring conflicting sides together. We’ve tried to make a secure space where thoughts and opinions can be exchanged freely; somewhere people can be useful to both the community and their families.

The secure space is in urban gardens. Great idea.

The link to the Community Gardens Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina is wrong in the article. You can find them at their website and on Facebook. Go support them, even just by making seed donations.

  1. Dear Mike,

Thank you very much on behalf of the BH community gardeners and the volunteers in the Community Gardens Association on your generous and kind offer.

I’m afraid we are not able to receive the seeds at all because we are registered as an NGO. That was not an issue until 2010 since we had received the seeds from the US (more precisely, from generous and committed Ms. Sue Johnson from the Seeds for Peace, Saratoga) as a donation. However, in 2010 the customs seized the seeds and destroyed it as ‘a measure to fight radiated seeds.’ — Whatever it means.

Now, they have passed the law in 2011 that only certified commercial companies can import seeds. I feel that the new law doesn’t have to do with any kind of radiation… However; with regret I must inform you that we are not able to receive any kind of seeds.

Once again, thank you very much, and hope things will improve for the community gardeners around the world very soon.

If you ever travel through the Balkans do not hesitate to stop by and meet the gardeners.

Wish you the best of luck

    1. That is both stupid and sad, and someone — Pro Specie Rara? — ought to be making much more of a fuss. Anyone in Bosnia and Herzegovina who could let us know what is going on?
