So what about sericulture in Kenya anyway?

A short piece on Kenyan sericulture from 2007 is one of our most popular posts, ((Which probably means something or other.)) with some 20 comments, the most recent one today, most of them asking for information on how to set up in the business. We have not been very good at replying to these queries as they have came up, and on the one occasion when we did we linked to pages at UNDP-Kenya, ICIPE and Biovision which are all now stone dead. So I thought I’d better clean things up a bit.

Rosemary Mwololo Nyamu pointed us to KARI’s National Sericulture Station-Thika in a comment, but unfortunately this very interesting-sounding place is nowhere to be found on KARI’s website. Not to worry, though. Rosemary has also provided a nice write-up on sericulture, and useful contacts, including her own, at Infonet-Biovision. I just hope this link lasts a bit longet than the others…

  1. Infonet-biovision is alive and well! The articles by Rose and colleagues from national sericulture centre at THIKA is my one-stop reference on a wide range of agribiz projects. I’ve tried aquaculture and now pursuing seri and apiculture for bees. Kudos Rose et al!

  2. A group by the name Tajiri Sericulture is in the process of leasing a 2 acres of land along river Tana in Garsen Constituency and start the silk farming.
Kindly assist financially in jump-starting the project given the potential of the area.
    Thank you

  3. Malindi Single and Couples Welfare Group has shown willingness to start the silk farming. The eleven (11) members have requested for a brief training. Furthermore, they have a project proposal to invest in agri-business i.e irrigating a 15 acres of land along river Tana.
The area has plenty of community land ideal for small-scale farming.
Kinly consider the potential of the area.
    Thanks
