  1. It’s that downward-sloping tunnel – rather steep at 7 degrees, and unique in global genebanks. My quixotic explanation for the tunnel slope is that the midnight sun shines down its entire length on `syttende mai’ (Norway’s National Day). Some of the local abandoned coal mines have become filled with solid ice. Clearing the soil down to the sandstone bedrock above the entrance might work if drainage channels were dug in the rock to take the summer snow melt off to either side.
