A visit to the CIAT web-site to check the cassava story uncovered this comment on indigenous Andean potato agriculture:
“Our results suggest that some agricultural pests may also respond negatively to the expansion of monocultures” … “This is the inverse of the pattern typically expected for the spatial dimension of the monoculture effect.”
That is, the more the monoculture fields are aggregated the better the suppression of weevils.
