  1. Giant kelp – Macrocystis pyrifera. A good example of a natural `monoculture’, you know, the ones agroecologists say can’t survive. Darwin went into raptures about it, comparing kelp beds to tropical forest: ‘Yet if in any country a forest was destroyed, I do not believe that nearly so many species of animals would perish as would here, from the destruction of the kelp.’ (C.
