The agricultural landscapes in China paper is still citing Zhu et al. 2000 with the claim: “The work has furthermore proven that intra-specific crop diversification provides a valuable ecological approach to disease control and sustainable crop production, which can be highly effective over a large scale (Zhu et al., 2000).”

    The main message of Zhu et al., which is overlooked, is that the deployment of modern blast-resistant hybrid rice varieties over a large area can sufficiently reduce disease pressure locally that blast-susceptible traditional varieties can thrive. Success is more due to modern breeding technology than to “ecological” agriculture.
