  1. Forest species distribution modelling

This review concludes that: “A key downfall of SDM as it stands is the lack of inclusion of biotic interaction into the modeling procedure.”
Yet a major form of forest management – tree plantations – seems to depend almost entirely (my view) on trees introduced to continents away from their homelands, thereby escaping co-evolved pests and diseases. Thus `biotic interaction’ is the main controlling factor in forest species distribution.
One example of hundreds: the main tree (about 50 individuals) in our garden in Scotland is Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) from the Pacific North-West coast of North America (it’s the State tree of Alaska). It is all over Scotland in plantation forestry.
